A Universalist and Internationalist, Tagore was a fearless rationalist, whose reliance on reasoning and emphasis on human freedom militated against a divisive and parochial understanding of social struggle. He was against any kind of rigidity in ideas which provoked society to bias towards a certain direction sans the core principles of humanity and openness. He was convinced that extremism led disaffection was an inculcated phenomenon by determined souls “… interested groups led by ambition and outside instigation are today using the communal motive for destructive political ends.” In his own declaration, he was “… proud of my humanity… Let me feel with unalloyed gladness that all the great glories of man are mine.”
