The women of Uttarakhand showed their love and respect for their trees in a unique way as they confronted the woodcutters by putting themselves between the trees and the woodcutters. The women stood in a row around the trees. They then chased the labourers out of the forest and kept vigil throughout the night. After a three-day standoff, the men finally withdrew without having accomplished their task. This came to be known as The Chipko Movement.
