the tripartite pact or the Berlin Pact, was an agreement signed on 27 september 1940 in berlin by germany, japan and italy, after which the three countries became military allies and came to be known as the axis powers.

all three countries agreed to provide mutual military assistance if they get attacked by any neutral country which was not already involved in the world war 2. this was primarily designed to make the neutral usa think twice before fighting in support of the allied powers.

besides this, germany and italy acknowledged the japanese supremacy over east asia, while japan acknowledged the the supremacy and leadership of germany and italy in europe.
