While diluting an acid, why is it recommended that the acid should be added to water and not water to theacid? Answer: Dilution of concentrated acid is an exothermic process. If water isadded to a concentrated acid, the heat generated may cause the mixture tosplash out and cause burns.

Large amount of heat is produced on mixing the acid with water. Hence, the acid is always diluted by adding the acid to water slowly and with constant stirring.
