Coachman Ali, who begins as an ace hunter is reduced to a broken man, because of Miriam's elopement. All he can do is travel to the Post Office everyday in the hope of receiving a letter from Miriam. He realizes the pain of being separated from his daughter and love for Mirian, only after she leaves him. Ali would go to the Post Office and wait tirelessly to hear his name to be called. This journey and his incessant worrying for Miriam even plays havoc with Ali's health. Ali falls ill and he becomes aware of the fact that his end his near. Love for his daughter reduces the hunter to a heart-broken individual. This change in Ali's mental and physical health is reflected through the entire story.

Ali who was also known as coachman Ali was known for his expertise in killing animals and birds. But when his daughter Mariam got married and shifted to Punjab he derived no pleasure of hunting. He could no longer bear the thought of children being separated from parents
