Helen had a faint memory of the time before her illness. She remembered that she lived in a tiny house that had a big square room and servant’s room attached to it. The house was covered with vines, climbing roses and honeysuckles. From the garden it looked like an arbour. The little porch of the house was hidden from view by a screen of yellow roses and Southern smilax. Humming-birds and bees had made it their favourite haunt.
