Indians became united as they were subjected to a common rule of the British and had common cultural heritage, common history etc. The western education led to spread of liberal ideas like rationalism, individualism, democracy, equality, freedom of thought and nationalism. This introduced a period of intellectual renaissance in India. Educated Indians began to analyse the causes of India’s subjugation, India’s weaknesses and also the evil effects of foreign rule. This emboldened them to voice their grievances and demand their basic rights initially at the provincial level. It also gave birth to Indian National Congress in 1885.
