O1) the BRITISH considered forests as wildernesses which must be brought under cultivation to enhance the income of the state.

2) They directly encouraged the production of cash crops like jute , cotton , etc.

3) Need for sleepers in railway building.

4) the British gave vast areas at cheap rates to European planters and the contractors to provide wood needed for shipbuilding.

5) By 1890's British sent experts to discover the forest resources of India. The forests in India were cut at a massive scale to meet the needs of timber for shipbuilding.

DEFORESTATION MEANS CUTTING OF TREESWITHOUT REALISING ITS MANIFOLD EVILS AND DESTRUCTIVE EFFECTS.

The most important causes of deforestation is human ignorance and greed .Ignorant people were not aware of the harmful effects of cutting down the trees .Greedy people continued clear forest for their own selfish interest .....

Some causes are, for which deforestation is going on.....

● Agriculture and farming.

● Colonization .

● For establishment of cities and towns.

● For wood (fuel wood, raw materials for industries)

● Overpopulation

PRESENT SCENARIO IN INDIA....

Due to deforestation the forest cover of India has fallen below the minimum recommended level .According to experts ,forest should cover about one third of the total area of country but in India forest cover around 24% of the total area.
