The following are the causes for the abandonment of the Non-cooperation Movement:
1. The movement was getting violent. The peaceful protest in a bazaar of Chauri-Chaura in Gorakhpur transmuted into a stringent conflict in which more than 20 policemen were executed.
2. Gandhiji recognized the need for training the satyagrahis in order to launch a mass movement.
3. Moreover, some of the members of Congress were bored with mass struggles and aspired to engage in polls to the provincial councils.
4. Manufacturers, artists, peasants etc. explained the term ‘Swaraj’ in their own fashion. Some of the political leaders of people, for instance, Alluri Sitaram Raju stated that force has to be used for the freedom of India. However, their conditions were not authorised by Congress.
