1- The first world war led to huge increase in defence expenditure which was financed by taxes . High rate of unemployment , inflation and force recruitment in the army caused widespread anger.

2- After entering from South Africa Gandhiji organized satyagrah at various places.These satyagrahas provided base to the Non - cooperation Movement.

3- The Rowlatt Act was passed by Imperial Legislative Assembly which provide enormous powers to police to arrest anyone without any trial. The aim of the act was to repress political activities .

4- Jallianwala Bagh added fuel to the fire.People were already agitated against the Rowlatt Act. People had gathered to protest against the new act. General Dyer entered the park and killed many people. As the news spread , crowds took to the streets.

5- The fear of harsh treaty on the Ottoman emperor( the Khalifa ) brought the muslims close to Gandhiji . A young generation of muslims leaders like Mohammad Ali and Shaukat Ali wad in favour of a united mass action against the Britishers.
