The following were the concerns affecting  town planning in the nineteenth century :

  • Regaining control over the increasing population of colonial cities.
  • To arrange the planning for the settlement of cities and to apply the map method for the construction of companion buildings.
  • Regularly conducting cleanliness of cities for prevention of diseases like cholera and plague.
  • The division of cities on the basis of racial discrimination was also a concern for colonial rulers.
  • After the Revolt of 1857, the safety of Europeans, the protection of public buildings and property was also a concern.
  • All Europeans were troubled by the Black Towns and slums. These were considered responsible for all the problems prevailing in European cities, as well as the construction of 'chawl' or multi-storeyed buildings in the cities due to congestion.
  • The raising of funds for the maintenance, cleanliness and improvement of colonial cities was also a matter of concern, for which a lottery committee was started in the colonial period. The medium of transport and communication is a major point of big cities. The means of transport and its expansion were also to be paid attention to in order to make the city run smoothly.

(i)Two concerns which influenced the town planning in the nineteenth century were defence and health. (ii)In many towns British built forts to protect their factories. Around the fort a vast open space was left open. This vast space was known as the Maidan.
