Many new kinds of public places such as town halls, public parks, theater and cinema halls emerged in the colonial city.

In colonial cities such as Madras, Kolkata and Mumbai, rulers established new institutions to control their economic activities and to demonstrate their sovereignty which were inspired by the following objectives -

 

• After the establishment of trading centers in Mumbai, Madras and Kolkata, there was a huge stock of commodities and many factories were established in the settlements here.

• The presence of the port in these cities greatly facilitated trade. At these ports, goods were easily unloaded by ships. New maps were created in colonial cities, data was collected, as well as facilities like water supply, road construction and health were made available in the city. The Municipal Corporation used to keep records of births and deaths of people.

• After the introduction of the railway in 1853 AD, railway stations, railway workshops and railway lines were laid in its colonial cities. After this, public places like ports, forts, educational institutions, railway stations expanded in cities. Military cantonments were developed as safe places. Insurance agencies, traffic depots and banks were established in colonial cities with the objective of simplifying economic activities and transactions.

• Temples and mosques were built according to the religious beliefs of the people. Underground pipelines and drainage arrangements were made in the cities, its purpose was to make the cleaning system run smoothly.

• With the establishment of big cities, the facility of export and import increased more than before, which was also in favor of colonial governance. With the establishment of big cities, the employer got flooded and the tourism sector also got a boost.
