Champaran is a district of Bihar.
During the British rule, the Champaran peasants were sharecroppers.
They were forced to grow indigo on 15 per cent of the land and give it to the English estate owners as rent.
The English people saw that the indigo was unprofitable so they forced them to stop its cultivation.
