The difficulties in the preparation of fluorine are as follows:-

  • Fluorine is not available in free state because it has an extreme reactivity.
  • Oxidization is not possible in fluorine.
  • Preparation is not possible by the electrolysis of hf.
  • It is very difficult to separate fluorine from its compounds.

There are two ways which scientist adopted in order to prepare fluorine.

  1. Dennis method.
  2. Whytlaw Gray's method.

Explanation:

Difficulties to isolate the fluorine as follows:

  • It is most electronegative element.
  • Oxidation is not possible for this element
  • It exist as F-  form in the metals
  • Fluorine is a very strong oxidizing element.
  • It cannot be prepared by the electrolysis process.
  • Fluorine molecule is extremely reactive.
  • If we separate the fluorine during the electrolysis it is reacted with graphite which is used as an electrode..
  • We cannot store the fluorine gas because it is extremely reactive.
  • The following methods are used to prepare fluorine. They are Dennis method and Whytlaw Gray's method .
