As an independent nation , India embarked on a quest focused on the concept of cohesion in diversity. As a heritage-laden civilization comprising all the great religions of the world including numerous races, languages and traditions, the diversity of India was enormous.

For a broad and pluralistic nation such as India, federalism or federal democracy is the most suitable type. It seeks to facilitate socio-political cooperation between two sets of identities by means of various structural 'shared rule' mechanisms.

However there are difficulties in the path of federalism

Explanation:

  • Language diversity in India occasionally blows the Constitution's federal spirit. In India, 22 languages have been licensed constitutionally. There are also hundreds of dialects throughout the world. Problems occur as the federation 's largest body attempts to push a certain language against others. The official language tussle in India remains a big problem
  • India is a glorious example of "religious heterogeneity" and often chaos causes the federation to collapse. But it does not always have to be a divisive process. As long as the population is fairly inclusive and the government is sincerely committed to a secular agenda, religion cannot create imbalances within a federation.
  • A "federation" is also challenged by "structural inequalities" & relative "financial & fiscal incompatibilities" between the constituent states. Calls for "strategic planning" & "development", national economic equity, and "state financial autonomy" are unbalanced forces in the sector. A federation has problems with the need for the financial equity of a country.
  • "Federation obstacles" are also provided by external variables. Neighboring countries' intervention is creating tensions in India's north-eastern states. China's declaration of a portion of the LAC territories of Arunachal Pradesh challenges the territorial integrity of India. In India, in Sri Lanka, the Tamil problem causes disturbing influences. Pak supposedly had an influence on the movement in Khalistan in the past & weakened the Indian Federation
  • A number of federations in the world have used a constitutional process such as a level playing field of units / states in the 'Second Chamber' and the modifications by the States of all constitutional changes in order to prevent the evil of the dominant influence of larger units on smaller units in a federation. In India, the "Rajya Sabha, the" "Second House" "and the "States" are not represented fairly or have a major say in the changes made to the "Constitution" by the States."
  • "Regionalism" has made India's "federalism" one of the major challenges. In mitigating the centralization of the "separation of power" between central & state govts, federalism is best advocated as a democratic structure. The diversity of India has several variables, "including regionalism". People from the far north-east frequently feel a "great distance" from New Delhi, & in larger states, people from the south feel careless. The desire for more states has" gained popularity" in recent years.
