Answer: The Great Depression affected all capitalist economies in the world:

  1. American banks immediately withdrew the loans they had made to Germany.
  2. Businesses closed, unemployment rose and inflation was rampant.
  3. German money had so little value, that it might take a wheelbarrow full of notes to buy a few groceries!
  4. In Germany by 1932 industrial output fell to 40% of the 1929 level.
  5. As jobs disappeared unemployed youth took to criminal activities.
