Answer:

The Emergency is one of the most significant political events of post-Independence India. The 21-month Emergency declared on June 25, 1975, by the then PM Indira Gandhi is often referred to as the "darkest phase of independent India". It was the third time an Emergency was declared in independent India. The first two were during the Indo-China War 1962 and Indo-Pak War 1971 respectively.

The goal of the 21-month-long Emergency in the country was to control “internal disturbance”, for which the constitutional rights were suspended and freedom of speech and the press withdrawn.

In the early hours of June 26, on the other hand, hundreds of political leaders, activists, and trade unionists that opposed the Congress Party were imprisoned.

Changes after emergency

• The ruling Congress lost control of India for the first time in independent India in the Indian general election, 1977.

• Congress lost its power and became weak. The party lost around 200 seats.

• Four major opposition parties were unified into the Janata Party by Jayaprakash Narayan.

• Janata Party's top leaders - Morarji Desai, Charan Singh and Ram - brought the first non-Congress ruling government in Delhi.

• The leader of Janata party- Morarji Desai became the first non-Congress Prime Minister of India.
