Like any government, collecting taxes was the main source of income for the Mughal emperors. Of course there were taxes on lands, cultivation and other businesses. But there were rulers who did not care for the people but just the money, and then there was akbar.

Akbar was one of the most farsighted rulers of Mughal india. He supported farmers by foregoing the taxes when they were not doing good. And most importantly, akbar had abolished jizya tax(started by qutb ud din aibak), which was imposed only on the Hindus till then. He proclaimed everyone is equal under his rule. He even went on to find a new religion cald din ilahi(one god), which was just used by sycophants till his death and it too died a silent death with him. He is also known to be the first person to be friendly with the mighty rajputs in india.
