The bhakti movement began in south India around the seventh century in the Vishnu and Shiva temples of tirupati and kanchi. It was begun by the Alvar saints.
These saints promoted caste equality.
They also preached the equality of men and women.
They stressed on devotion and not complex rituals to worship god
Bhakti saints preached devotion to personal god, either with the form that is saguna or without any form that is nirguna.
They preached in local language and therefore had a large following among the common people.
