Upanishads’ have constantly emphasized on the expansion of the consciousness through expansion of mind. Spirituality or being spiritual means transcending all the barriers that prevents a mind from expanding i.e our own emotions like anger, lust, greed, jealousy etc. When we successfully transcends these bondage within our minds, our souls become pure and we move from the path of ignorance to the path of knowledge.

So that brings me to my next point how can we lead a spiritual life? Is it possible to maintain inner equilibrium? The answer is yes we can lead a spiritual life. You see we all want happiness and joy in life- we love to engage in activities that give us sensory pleasure- may it be dining in a marvelous restaurant , or listening to sweet music, or wearing branded clothes, or using expensive gadgets, or going on a vacation anything. But, we find that the pleasure that we get from these materialistic objects or engaging in these materialistic activities fade away after a certain time period. All materialistic pleasures are temporary. As soon as we get bored with one particular object/activity/person, our mind constantly searches for something new. The way there is an ‘expiry date’ to every other product that we buy from the market, similarly there is an expiry date for every joy that we buy.

So, how can we find bliss, the eternal happiness that will never end? This is the question which most of us ask. Spirituality is the very essence that can provide you the real taste of life. It begins exactly from the point where all our chasing for sensory pleasures ends. Spirituality doesn’t mean going up to the Himalayas or escaping into the jungles in search of God. It can be developed even by living in this world of materialism- by bringing a few changes in our lifestyle- such as treating others as fellow human beings without discriminating; helping the needy and the poor; being satisfied with whatever God has given; keeping one’s expectations as low as possible, dealing with situations with a positive outlook. How can we make harmony outside, if we are not harmonious from within? We need to accept the truth as a never-changing phenomenon. Most of us either keep running from the truth or waste unnecessary energy behind trying hard to change it. We accuse others for whatever wrong happens to us in order to satisfy our regretful consciousness; we lack mental peace for we keep finding faults with others. How come we never find fault with ourselves? Aren’t we all human beings? If we can ignore the faults of ourselves, so can we do the same in the case of others. We rise from ignorance to spirituality the moment we learn the concepts of tolerance and forgiveness. This can be done by improving our mental status.

That brings me to my next point how can we improve our mental status? We can improve our mental stability and tame ourselves to be more tolerant by practising meditation and yoga on a regular basis. Meditation increases mental strength and focus which in turn improves one’s decision-making and problem solving abilities. Spirituality defines what we are, it unleashes the bonds that tempts us to move astray from the right path, thereby helping us to live a more contented and balanced life
