What were the monster doing in the field? Why did Guliver forgive the farmers son?

The monsters were harvesting the crop with scythes.

The farmer's son picked Gulliver up and scared him but the farmer took Gulliver from the boy's hands and hit his son. Gulliver made a sign that the boy should be forgiven, and kissed his hand. Gulliver was not annoyed with the boy and forgave him.
