The National Council of Education was set up in June, 1906. Its main purpose was to provide education on national lines and under national control. Teachers were national, curriculum was national, based on national cultural heritage and aimed at national development in all directions—economic, moral and material.
The following persons were associated with the formation of the National Council of EducationSir Gurudas Banerjee, Sri Satishchandra Mookherjee, Ashutosh Chowdhury, Hirendranath Dutta, Bepinchandra Pal, Surendranath Banerjee, Subodhchandra Mullick, Taraknath Palit, Nilratan Sarkar, Motilal Ghose, Rabindranath Tagore and others. The Council consisted of 92 members who should hold office for 5 years. It had one President, one or more Vice-Presidents, two secretaries and one treasurer. A meeting was convened to form such a Council in the Calcutta Town Hall in 1906. It was presided over by Ashutosh Chaudhury. Bengal National College was inaugurated in the said meeting. Sri Aurobindo was its first principal. Bengal National School was also set up in the same year.
