During the neolithic age people learned to domesticate animals, and farm. These are huge accomplishments because they allow for a steady supply of food. It is a lot more efficient than the nomadic (hunter, gatherer) lifestyle of the past. This surplus of food allowed people to specialize. Now, the men did not have to spend all their time trying to take down the woolly mammoth, and the women did not have to spend all their time digging for roots so they would get to eat. Because of these accomplishments one person could farm and he could produce enough food so that he could trade with the shoemaker or the blacksmith.
