Political Causes :

● The application of pokicies of subsidiary alliances and Doctrine of Lapse angered the ruling sections of the society.

● Annexation of Awadh on the grounds of misgovernment was greatly resented. The people who lost their jobs were not provided with any relief.

● The British policy of annexation led to displacement of a large number of rulers and chiefs.

Econonic Causes:

● The British policy of economically exploiting India was greatly resented by each and every section of society.

● Peasants suffered due to high taxation system and strict revenue collection system.

● Artisans and Craftsmen were ruined by the large scale influx of cheap imported British goods.
