What were the purpose of the arrival of sir William Jones in Calcutta? Describe the work done by him?

William Jones arrived in Kolkata as a junior judge in Calcutta supreme court of company in 1783.
Apart from his proffesion as judge he also take interest in Knowing Indian culutre ,people,language.He learn new language by different religious scholars and And read ancient text and found it very interesting and useful but at that time Indian forget their Ancient culutre .Then to give Indians their original culutre he set up Asiatic society.

In 1783 sir willam jones was appointed as the supreme court's judge. In addition to being an expert in law jones was a linguist. He learned Sanskrit from pandits and knows various languages like arabic urdu. JONES SET UP ASIATIC SOCIETY IN BENGAL AND STARTED A JOURNAL CALLED ASIATICK RESEARCHES. he shared a deep respect for indian culture and think that a new study of ancient indian text could form the basic future of india.
