● The different rulers reigned India during the early British period where,the rulers had to fight against each other in different wars to acquire their territories and place.This is the reason for which the wars between the rulers made Indian disunited in a big sense.
● Every ruler wanted to take forward their legacy for which the fights between the rulers continued due to which the normal people of India cannot also stay united with each other.This was observed by the British in the later times successfully.
● Differences in caste,creed,race and inequality based on caste,creed,race,religion,gender made the people of India disunited more.The practice of untouchability was a prejudice that made the disunited Indian condition for people more grave.

British took advantage of Civil wars ie. mostly the issues between heirs for thrones. Not, issues with different kingdoms or ethnic groups (mostly).
They didn’t care about Indian diversity.
1857 First Independence war reshaped their attitudes towards Indians.
They privileged all the ethnic groups who supported them in the war and discriminated others (That’s why some part of India had lower representation in Indian Army historically. They simply discarded them.)
The Final master stroke was the divide based on religion. They saw what happens when Hindus and Muslims unite in the First Independence War. They don’t want to redo that mistake.
