Under Iqta System, the land of the empire was divided into several large and small tracts called Iqta and assigned these Iqtas to his soldiers, officers and nobles. In the beginning, an Iqta was based upon salary. Later, under Firoz Shah Tughlaq it became hereditary.

He was the First Sultan who set up a “permanent Standing Army” of the sultanate. He abolished the Iqta System introduced by Iltutmish and started paying them salary in cash

It was a kind of territorial assignment which was guided by three factors- Collection of revenue, Maintenance of army. Maintenance of the traditional system in order to prevent any untoward reaction. The term Iqtadari system was coined by Nizamul Mulk to maintain smooth administration of the Abbassid Empire.

The Iqta system was a practice of Tax farming that was introduced by Iltutmish in Delhi Sultanate. It was basically grant of revenue from a territory in lieu of salary.
