what were the type of architectures that came about in the colonial period? What were some of their hallmarks?

It’s called Georgian Architecture.

This kind of stately architecture came about during the reigns of George I-IV of England, and is characterized by the use of symmetry, and its formality. Rooms tend to be highly defined, as I understand it, and it corresponds to the almost fanatically Conservative manner of the times.

One architect who’s known for a contemporary rendering of the Georgian style is William Poole, or Raleigh, NC (), whose website includes some interesting insights into the style. You’ll need to click around and get a good look at not only the plans, but on the notes on each, which I found pretty helpful.

This would later morph into Gothic and then Victorian style, and ultimately, into the Craftsman style which came from the pens of William Morris and Gustav Stickley. Take the time to look at home plans from each era, and you can generally spot the trends and changes which came about, and follow the roots.
