The usual topics of small talk are the weather, health of the speakers, politics, games, children etc.

These topics usually bring out a steady flow of conversation, however if the other party finds it difficult to carry on, it is advisable to slowly change the topic to one that he/she is comfortable talking about. One must listen to the other person and should not take up the entire conversation or try to show off his/her knowledge about a subject.

If both parties run out of topics, it would be better to excuse and carry on with other work, to avoid an embarrassing silence.
