Cathode rays are composed of beam of negatively charged particles which were found by some experiments. One such experiment is your 2nd question

2. When cathode rays are passed through electromagnetic waves, they get deflected. Since electromagnetic waves are chargeless, scientists found that the cathode ray particles must have some charge. The direction of their deflection showed that they are negatively charged particles i.e. beam of electrons.
