The loss in mass is due to the loss of CO2 and H2O. Find the amount of CO2 (or H2O) lost, and use it to find the amount of NaHCO3 it came from.

x g CO2 + (8.42-x) g H2O = 8.42g

y mol CO2 = y mol H2O

y mol CO2 = x g CO2 / 44.0g/mol

y mol H2O = (8.42 -x)g H2O / 18.0g/mol

x/44 = (8.42-x)/18

x = 5.975

mass of CO2 = 5.975 g

5.975g CO2 x (1 mol CO2 / 44.0g CO2) x (2 mol NaHCO3 / 1 mol CO2) x (84.0 g NaHCO3 / 1 mol NaHCO3) = 22.81g NaHCO3

This is the mass of NaHCO3 in the original sample

Percent NaHCO3 = 22.81g / 60.42g x 100 = 37.76%
