What will be the ratio of the root mean square speeds of the molecules of an ideal gas at 270K and 30K?

The average velocity of gas particles is found using the root mean square velocity formula which is =3RTM−−−−√


, where R is the Universal Gas Constant, T is the temperature in Kelvin and M is the mass in kg of a mole of gas.


Hence the Mass of H2

is 2 and that of O2 is 32 and the given temperature of H2 is 50 and that of O2 is 800  so for the given problem, the ratio of the velocities for H2:O2=502×32800−−−−−−−√=1
