Epiglottis is the leaf shaped cartilaginous flap present at the junction between windpipe and food pipe that prevents food to accidentally move to the windpipe and block it. If epiglottis is absent, the windpipe may get blocked if food particles accidentally enter the windpipe and thus can even cause death.
