The alkaline mucous layer protects epithelial cells of stomach wall against the acids and enzymes in the gastric lumen. If mucus is not secreted by the gastric glands, then the hydrochloric acid secreted by the glands will digest or corrode the walls of the stomach.

Mucus has several functions associated because when food is ingested mucus adheres them into food bolus making it for easy passage
Mucus neutralises effect of acidity in stomach thereby causing suitable environment for digestion..
there are lot more functions but these being mainly of them..
