Iodine is needed to create thyroxin which helps in the metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins and fats. Thyroxin is created by the thyroid gland situated in the neck region. If there is lack of iodine in the diet the amount of thyroxin produced will be less. This causes goitre i.e a swelled up neck!
