Answer:

When an animal cell and plant cell will kept into a solution of sugar or salt in water, cell will undergo the process of osmosis.

During the process of osmosis, the water will move outside cell through cell membrane of plant and animal cell because osmosis will allow water to move from lower solute concentration to higher solute concentration, that is the outside of the cell. It will make the cell to shrink.

Hence, animal and plant cell will shrink if placed in a solution of sugar or salt in water due to osmosis.

\bold{ANSWER}

1) If the medium surrounding the cell has a higher water concentration than the cell, meaning the outside solution is very dilute, the cell will gain water by osmosis, such a solution is known as hypotonic solution.

2) If the medium exactly the same water concentration as the cell, there will be no net movement across the osmosis,such a solution is known as isotonic solution.

3) If the medium has a lower concentration of water then the cell, meaning that it is a very concentrated solution, the cell will lose water by osmosis solution, such a solution is known as hypertonic solution.
