Osmosis is the net movement of water from an area of high water potential to an area of low water potential across a semipermeable membrane.
If a living cell is placed in a solution with a lower water potential (such as concentrated solution of sugar and salt) than the water potential of the cell, water will move out of the cell due to osmosis. When this occurs the cytoplasm of the cell shrinks in volume - due to water loss. This process is known as plasmolysis.
