Hypotonic Solution: A solution that has less concentration of solute outside the cell than inside the cell.

Isotonic solution: A solution that has equal concentration of salt and water(solvent) outside and inside the cell.

Hypertonic Solution: A solution that has greater concentration of solute outside the cell than inside the cell.

When a cell is placed in:

a. Hypotonic Solution: The cell will swell because the water from outside the cell will come inside the cell.

b. Isotonic Solution: No change will occur.

c. Hypertonic Solution: The cell will shrink because the cell will lose water.
