what will happen to the potential energy of the atoms of a solid when compressed ? On stretching a wire?

the compressing or stretching a body, we are actually storing energy in it. That energy will be used to bring the body to it's natural state. You can observe the same in a spring, which stores energy whenever it is stretched or compressed.So, the potential energy increases in both the cases.

Potential enrgy of atoms of a solid will increase in both the cases because in normal situation the atoms of solid are at the location of minimum potential energy
