When hydrochloric acid is added to iron filingsthen hydrogen gas and iron chloride are produced.
You can see it from following reaction:
Fe + 2HCl ------> FeCl₂ + H₂
From above you can see iron displaces hydrogen from HCl because it lies above hydrogen in the reactivity series, and FeCl₂ is formed with the evolution of hydrogen gas.
