Birsa Movement was started by Tribals (led by Birsa Munda) against the policy of the British to convert tribal land into agrarian land and allowing outsiders (farmers and thikedars) to cultivate their land and produce surplus, as the tribals were not able to generate surplus. This led to a social shift in the tribal community. They became the labourers on their own land from being the proud land owners.
This infuriated Birsa Munda and his fellow revolutionaries. They struggled against this new policy of the British and regularly engaged in Guerilla warfare. This brought heavy losses on the part of the British. They arrested Birsa Munda and he died of Cholera (though suspiciously) in the prison.
The warfare continued and the British freared for a repeat of 1857. They allowed the tribal rule to prevail in their lands and annulled the new State policy.
