What would be the result if there were no villi in the intestinal tract and the walls of the intestines were smooth?

What would happen if there were no villi in the walls of the small intestine? Digestion will suffer tremendously. Villi increase the surface area of the absorptive surface so that more nutrition can be absorbed from a relatively small tube. Life will be nearly impossible without the villi.
