what would be wrong with the connections if the ammeter deflected in the opposite direction during the experiment

The higher range ammeter must be used for measuring the higher value of current in the circuit. the applied voltage will be very high so there will be a need of higher range voltmeter to measure the applied voltage. If deflection takes place in opposite direction, the device is not properly connected in the circuit.
