The zero torque point occurs when the magnetic poles of the rotating coil (or armature) are in line with the poles of the field magnet. At this point there is no torque. ... The motor passes through this zero torque point every rotation (or actually twice if you have the split ring commutator)

Explanation:
The main function of the split rings is to reverse the direction of current in the circuit .In the absence of split ring the direction of current will not be reversed as a result the components of the motor will get clashed and motor will no longer work properly
