If the plasma membrane breaks down , then following things may happen : 1.There will be no difference between the contents of the cell and its external environment. 2.Since plasma membrane is selectively permeable and allows only useful substances to enter inside the cell. When it may get ruptured, then all the useful substances will also move out of the cell. 3. There will be effect on the diffusion of gases also. 4. The cell will lose its shape. 5. The cell may die even.
