Himalayas are the propellers of one of the most powerful rainfall (monsoon systems) of the world.
In summer they stop the south west monsoon and thus cause heavy rainfall.
In winters they bifurcate the Jet Streams thus causing winter rainfall.
Thus Himalayas are responsible for fulfilling the water and food requirements of more than 1.3 billion population or a sixth of the world population.
Without Himalayas, Cold and moisture-less winds from Siberia, Central Asia and Gobi Desert would enter the subcontinent owing to North East trade winds and Horse latitudes. Thus making the place a cold-dry desert with little or no vegetation.
