Mostly body cells contain 2 set of chromosomes (2 n-diploid).Gametes contain one set of chromosomes (n-haploid).
In human 23 pairs of chromosome are present.
Body cells = 2 n = 2 * 23 = 46
Gametes (sperm or ovum) = n = 23
The reduction division takes place in a diploid cell (2n) to yield four haploid (n) cells. This reduction division is called meiosis.
What would happened if meiosis not occur during the production of human sperm cell and egg cell?
If meiosis fail to occur during the production of gametes, then the gametes would be diploid (2 n) instead of haploid.
When such diploid gametes fuse (2 n+2 n) , tetra ploid (4 n) offspring is formed.
However tetra ploid are common among plants than in animals.

The result is an egg or sperm with only 23 chromosomes. When fertilizationoccurs, the normal 46 total number of chromosomes results in the fetus. If meiosis does not occur properly, anegg or sperm could end up with too many chromosomes, or not enough chromosomes.
