1) If meiosis did not occur, fusion of gametes would result in a doubling of the chromosomes for each successive reproduced generation.
2) For example in case of man egg cells and sperm cells like other cells must contain 46 chromosomes.
3) But if this were so then the union of egg nucleus and sperm nucleus, which takes place during fertilisation would produce a total of 92 chromosomes in zygote.

Mieosis is also known as reduction division. If meiosis does not occur properly, an egg or sperm could end up with too many chromosomes, or not enough chromosomes. Upon fertilization, the baby could then receive an extra chromosome (called a trisomy), or have a missing chromosome (called a monosomy).
