1) If meiosis did not occur, fusion of gametes would result in a doubling of the chromosomes for each successive reproduced generation.

2) For example in case of man egg cells and sperm cells like other cells must contain 46 chromosomes.

3) But if this were so then the union of egg nucleus and sperm nucleus, which takes place during fertilisation would produce a total of 92 chromosomes in zygote.

4) If it continues, this would be 184, 368 and so on.

5) This results in formation of abnormalities in each generation.

6) If meiosis did not occur, there is no genetic variation in the off springs produced by random fusion of the gametes.

7) Without meiosis the number of chromosomes are varied in every generation. Hence no species holds its characters and continues it or species’ is disordered

Mieosis is also known as reduction division. If meiosis does not occur properly, an egg or sperm could end up with too many chromosomes, or not enough chromosomes. Upon fertilization, the baby could then receive an extra chromosome (called a trisomy), or have a missing chromosome (called a monosomy).
