Well the prevailing theory on how we got mitochondria is a form of this called endosymbiosis. Plastid took in a mitochondrial organism and found the relationship to be beneficial to both, so essentially, those separate plastid and anaerobic unicellular organisms evolve to become a eukaryotic organism living off of the mitochondrial energy.
