I believe that providing cash or a general gift card is a method to convey the message, "I do not assume to know what is important to you; please get yourself exactly what you want." People nearly never even get close to what I might want for gifts, thus this is very crucial. I detest gift-giving holidays because people never seem to know what would make me happy, which means I will spend my entire life receiving gifts that I will almost always find useless. I pleaded with my relatives to give me gift cards to bookstores.
